“Tending the spark” in this uncertain world
As we move into the fall, and closer to the election, I find my anxiety spiking more often. There is so much unknown in this world - so many what-ifs, so much that has already gone horribly wrong.
I found myself in one such moment on Monday - shoulders tight and breath shallow.
And suddenly, I found myself really listening to the music playing in my earbuds.
It was a song I had learned recently, written last year by Heather Houston.
And we will care for each other
As the world around us unravels
And we will tend to the spark
of hope that lives within our grieving hearts
And we are here now, in this present moment
Lifting our voices and hearts
And we are here now, we have come together
We are tending the spark of hope
Oh may it grow
And we will care for each other
This image of tending a spark has stayed with me since. Moment by moment, we can tend the spark.
It doesn’t mean we’re not angry. It doesn’t mean we’re not tired. Or disillusioned.
But it means hope still exists - even in the small form of a spark. It can exist alongside all those other (completely valid) feelings.
So I invite you to take a moment and consider how you’re tending the spark - for yourself, your family, your community.
Wishing you moments of hope and joy amidst everything else.
